Inside the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards

janelynch Inside the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild AwardsWe kicked off Oscar week in style with the fitting fusion of film and fashion at the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. And while the wardrobe keepers and visionaries are usually left behind the scenes, Tuesday night they took center stage at the Beverly Hilton with a black tie gala honoring the costumer’s craft. Jane Lynch, who was clad in a red David Meister gown, served as the master of ceremonies. Though her Glee character is most comfortable in tracksuits, Lynch took the opportunity to butter up Lacoste, the evening’s sponsor. “I bet a shirt in each color would look magnifique in my closet,” she said. The brand’s iconic alligator had it’s place on stage and on the busts that served as unique centerpieces.

Lynch’s colleague Lou Eyrich, who can be credited with the vision for Sue Sylvester’s uniform, was honored for her Career Achievement in Television; Eyrich also took home the award for Outstanding Contemporary TV Series. Marcia Gay Harden gave the industry some props before presenting Clint Eastwood and Deborah Hopper with the Distinguished Collaborator Award. “I think costume designers first introduced me to Spanx so I thank you for that,” she said.

We had the pleasure of dining on poached pear gorgonzola salad, baked breast of chicken, and dolce de leche ice cream truffle alongside Wendy Chuck, who was nominated for Excellence in Contemporary Film for her work on The Descendants.Chuck snapped photos of the atmosphere while enjoying the festivities with her friends and colleagues.
rooneymara Inside the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild AwardsA few tables over Rooney Mara celebrated Trish Summerville, who transformed her into Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. In spite of being pierced and prodded, Mara was eager to cheer on her creative collaborator. “She’s amazing,” she said.  Summerville, for her part, combatted the jitters with a few champagne refills at the bar before scooping up her statue.

By the time Kate Beckinsale received her Lacoste Spotlight Award in a blue Vivienne Westwood gown, the room was good and buzzed. “It’s quite sobering seeing yourself age 20 years in five minutes,” said Beckinsale of her montage. “To me this was an award for being lucky.” And while she has been dressed by some of the best, costume designers have also come to her rescue.  The wardrobe trailer has been her  sartorial savior, whether it was “an unexpected pregnancy, a divorce, or a stubborn camel toe.”  And for that, an actress must be eternally grateful! katebeckinsale Inside the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards

JennaLyons Live from the American Express Skybox: Jenna Lyons

J. Crew President and Executive Creative Director Jenna Lyons has helped to revamp the company from a catalogue staple to a true lifestyle brand since coming since taking the reigns in 2010. Glam chatted up the creative force in the American Express Skybox after J. Crew’s colorful presentation on Tuesday to find out what shows she checked out so far and what is a must in her Fashion Week survival kit.

How have you been holding up during Fashion Week?
Other than running a bit of a fever, I’m ok! I know I’ve gotten a little sick along the way.

Have you had a chance to check out some of the other shows?

I did. I got to see Derek Lam, which was beautiful. I got to see Altuzarra, which was amazing. I got to see Prabal Gurung, which was incredibly beautiful. Creatures of the Wind I thought was great. It’s been fun.

What do you have in your Fashion Week survival kit?
I have these totally awesome little things called Wisps. I’m obsessed with them. They’re these little toothbrushes. I love them. I always have them for my son on the plane. They’re in my survival kit. They’re amazing!

If you weren’t involved in fashion, what would your career choice be?
Probably interior design.

Guns N’ Roses Closes Out Fashion Week With a Bang

gunsnroses Guns N’ Roses Closes Out Fashion Week With a BangWelcome to the Jungle! From frock stars to rock stars, fashion’s finest shed their pretension to jam. The chic set closed out the week with a smashing show at Hiro Ballroom.  DeLeon Tequila, along with Nur Khan, brought Guns N’ Roses to the stage as part of the DeLeon Tequila Rock Lounge series and Nur Khan Electric Sessions.

Not ones to wait for anything, some of the industry’s top editors spent the entire evening eagerly anticipating the iconic bands’ arrival. Margaritas flowed as VIPs tricked in to stake their claim on a prime table. Sienna Miller, Evan Rachel Rood, and Olivia Wilde held court with their respective beaus downstairs, while Matt Damon, Chelsea Clinton, Justin Timberlake, and Taylor Momsen took over the balcony.  Jimmy Fallon, Jared Leto, Kellan Lutz, Sean Avery and Hilary Rhoda circulated the space to mingle with other stylish attendees.

Though the crowd was up and cheering by 11, it wasn’t until after midnight that the room started to rock; Guns N’ Roses didn’t disappoint and kept the energy high ’til after 2am. What a way to send off the season!

#NYFW: J.Mendel Fall 2012

jmendel2 #NYFW: J.Mendel Fall 2012Gilles Mendel’s Fall 2012 collection floated down the runway Wednesday afternoon. This season, the designer derived inspiration from the visual texture of Gaudi’s work in Spain and the way Diana Vreeland interpreted it for Vogue through the lens of Helmut Newton. A structure–yet ethereal–influence prevailed with garments that concealed and revealed. Coats billowed, fabrics flirted, and strategically crafted cutouts made for a glamorous peek-a-boo effect.

J.Mendel continues to exude a sense of luxury, elegance, and refinement and come Oscar night we expect to see several of this season’s stunning pieces on the red carpet.

Accessory of the Week: Warby Parker Glasses

Screen shot 2012 02 15 at 11.28.09 AM Accessory of the Week: Warby Parker Glasses We just got back from a mad trip to NYC for fashion week and one of our most memorable stops was the Warby Parker show room. There were so many amazing glasses, it was nearly impossible to pick a favorite! But the best part about these glasses isn’t the incredible price (most pairs for under $100!) it’s the fact that for every pair you buy, Warby Parker sends a free pair to someone in need…

Live From the American Express Skybox: Bryanboy

138961506 Live From the American Express Skybox: BryanboyBryanboy is probably fashion’s most recognizable digital force. Tuesday night, the blogger extraordinaire lent his vibrant sartorial expertise to lucky card members at the American Express Skybox before the Narciso Rodriguez Fall 2012 show. Dressed in a powder blue Hugo Boss and a fabulous fur that any sartorial enthusiast would love to nab, Bryanboy assured guests that this was one of his more “tame” looks. There’s no telling where his style compass will land. “I’m not like a real, real man,” the Filipino fashionisto quipped. “I’m a boy who likes to play around.”

He’s played around with fashion blogging for so long that he’s caught the attention of à la mode mavens and established fashion editors alike. While Bryanboy originally intended for his blog to be a public diary capturing his daily quips and travel logs, it turned into something bigger. “Bloggers make fashion more approachable, more accessible” he said, later adding that his blog has helped his international audience live vicariously through him.

Aside from sharing social media tips (he has over 226,000 followers on Twitter), thoughts of a mutually beneficial relationship between blogs and magazines, and how cool it was to have Marc Jacobs name a bag after him (the BB Ostrich Bag), Bryanboy schooled us on the rules of fashion, his blogger besties, and his indulgent end-of-fashion-week ritual.

During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week the women seem to get all of the aesthetic attention. What advice do you have for guys who need to step up their style game?
Wear nice jeans… Number two, guys should never be afraid to accessorize — get a nice hat or a nice bow tie. And three, don’t be afraid to wear a lot of print or pattern.

Now, on to the ladies. What are your style don’ts?
I think it’s really important for women to dress their age. But to be honest with you, I really don’t believe in don’ts, because my life is a big don’t. The point of fashion is to really express yourself, to play with clothes. And if you make a mistake, that’s part of it.

Are you following any new talent in the blogging community? If so, who are your favorites?
It’s funny how in the blogging community, everybody’s quite close to each other. There’s really no competition because when it comes to blogs, everybody has a great point of view. I love Susie Bubble, I love my friend Rumi from Fashiontoast.com, and also Tommy Ton, who takes the best street style photos.

What’s your experience been like meeting and working with designers and other industry icons?
When you meet them in person, they’re usually very friendly. A lot of these designers are just human beings. It’s interesting how whenever I see them at parties or events, they’re just like us. And what I love about it is none of them have been really cold, even Anna Wintour. She’s one of the most incredibly gracious people that I’ve ever met. It’s funny how the press portrays, but she’s incredibly nice.

You’re obviously big on social media. If there were one Twitter hashtag to describe you, what would it be?
#FUN!

What’s the most annoying question that you get during interviews?
How I get into shows. That’s the number one question I get asked. How do you get in? How do you get invited?

What do you plan on wearing for the last day of fashion week?
You’ll have to log onto my blog and see. I change three times a day.

Since that’s a secret, do you have any that you can share?
I’ve been blogging for eight years and my life has been pretty transparent online. But if I have to say something, it’s probably that after fashion week, after my last show, I always get a burger.
